How to use Secret Inbox

Everything you can do, step by step.

1. Make your link

  1. Open Secret Inbox and type your name.
  2. Pick a question (or write your own) and a colour.
  3. Tap Create my link and confirm you are 16 or older.

2. Save your recovery key

  1. Right after making your link, your inbox shows a recovery key.
  2. Tap Copy key or Save as file and keep it somewhere private.
  3. On another phone, go to My inbox and type the key to open your messages.

Without the key nobody can open your inbox, not even us.

3. Share your link

  1. In your inbox, open the Share tab.
  2. Pick the message to post with your link, then tap WhatsApp, Facebook, X or Telegram, or More for any other app.
  3. For Instagram: save the story picture, add it to your story, then add the Link sticker with your link.

4. Read your messages

  1. New messages appear in Messages; sealed cards are unread.
  2. Tap a card to open it. Use the chips to see unread, replied or filtered messages.
  3. Messages disappear after 3 days.

5. Reply privately

  1. Open a message and write in the reply box.
  2. Tap Send reply. The sender sees it on their Sent page and can answer back.
  3. Turn on Also show on my link page to show the message and your answer publicly on your link.

6. Share an answer as a story

  1. Open a message, type your answer, then tap Share as story.
  2. Pick a design and tap Share picture (or Save picture).
  3. WhatsApp text sends the message and your answer as text instead.

7. Send someone a message

  1. Open their link, type your message and optionally pick an emoji.
  2. Tap Send anonymously. They never see who you are.
  3. Check your Sent page later for their reply. It stays on the device you sent from.

8. Block, filter and pause

  1. Block sender in a message refuses further messages from that sender’s network.
  2. Settings → Filter these words moves messages with those words to the Filtered tab.
  3. Pause my link stops new messages; Delete my link removes everything.

If something looks wrong

  • My inbox is empty on a new phone. Open My inbox and type your recovery key.
  • The link opens inside Instagram and acts oddly. Tap the ⋯ menu and choose “Open in browser”.
  • “This link no longer exists”. Links with no messages for about a week are removed. Make a new one.
  • Share picture does nothing. Use Save picture, then post it from your gallery.
  • I can’t see a reply on my Sent page. Replies show on the device you sent from, for 3 days.
